About the Arctic Observatory Network

The Arctic Observatory Network (AON) has been established by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) to initiate scientific research leading to:

  • Increased understanding of the causes and consequences of current environmental change in the arctic
  • Predictive scenarios of future arctic change and its regional and global consequences
  • Development of adaptive responses to arctic change

During the International Polar Year (2007-08), observatory sites were established to support these objectives, including seven in terrestrial ecosystems.  Our project originated from this effort and has been continually active since.
